How to Change a Photo Background to White — Free, Online
PhotoFit Guide · August 2026 · 5 min read
Your photo was taken against a yellow wall, a curtain, or outdoors — but the passport application requires a plain white background. Here is how to change your photo background to white online for free, without Photoshop, without any app download, and in under a minute.
Why passport photos need a white background
Governments require plain white or light backgrounds for two reasons: automated facial recognition systems perform better against uniform backgrounds, and printed passport photos scan more cleanly against white. Any color or pattern behind the face can cause an application to be flagged or rejected.
The requirement is consistent across most countries — a plain white or very light background with no shadows, patterns, or other people visible.

2
Upload your photo

3
Go to the Background tab
Switch to the Background tab in the tool. PhotoFit's AI will automatically detect the person and separate them from the background.
4
Select white as the replacement color
Click the white color swatch or type #ffffff in the hex field. You can also choose any other color — light blue, grey, red — to match specific country requirements.
5
Review the result
Check that the edges around the hair and face look clean. If there are any stray pixels, use the fine-tune brush to clean them up.
6
Download your photo
Click Download. Export as JPEG for the smallest file size, or PNG if you need a transparent background for other use cases.
