How to Write Name & Date on the Back of an Exam Photo

Many Indian competitive exams — TNPSC, NDA, CDS, and state PSCs — ask you to write your name and exam date on the back of the printed photograph attached to your form. Here is exactly what to write, how to write it, and which exams require it.

🔑 The most important rule

Only the printed photo pasted on the physical application form needs text on the back. The digital photo you upload online must be a plain passport-style photo with absolutely no text — adding text to the digital upload will likely cause rejection.

What to write — by exam

ExamWrite on back of printed photo
TNPSCFull name + date of examination
NDAFull name + father's name
CDSFull name + date of examination
CAPFFull name + date of examination
UPSC CSEFull name (check current notification)
MPSCFull name + date of birth
BPSCFull name + date of examination

How to write without damaging the photo

1
Use a soft ballpoint pen or pencil
A soft-tip pen (or a 2B pencil) spreads the pressure over a larger area. Avoid gel pens or hard ball-point pens — they can emboss the writing through to the front of the photo.
2
Write on a soft surface
Place the photo face-down on a soft cloth or folded tissue before writing. Writing on a hard table transfers all pressure directly onto the photo surface.
3
Write lightly in small letters
You do not need large letters — just legible. Light pressure is the priority. Keep the text within the lower half of the photo back.
4
Let the ink dry before sticking
If using pen, wait 30 seconds before pasting the photo on the form. Wet ink can smear onto the application.

Frequently asked questions

Does the online photo also need name and date?

No — the digital photo uploaded to the exam portal must be a clean passport-style photo with no text. Only the printed photo pasted on the physical form needs writing on its back.

What if I damage the photo while writing?

Take a new print. Most exam forms cost ₹10–20 per photo print. Do not use a damaged or smudged photo — it can be rejected during document verification.

Should I write in English or Tamil/regional language?

Always write in English unless the exam notification specifically says otherwise. Match the spelling to your application form exactly.

Can I use a stamp instead of writing?

Some candidates use rubber stamps with their name — this is generally acceptable. Avoid inkpad colours that can stain the form; black or blue ink is safest.
